Question: How can I navigate through all the food temptations during the holidays?
This was one of the questions asked during our call last week. I had to pause, since I realized that I wanted to dissect what she was actually asking. It had been a long time since I had felt that way, and wanted to remember what it had been like and the journey to how I live today and support others to experience this kind of freedom!
First of all, if someone is wondering if they will be ‘tempted’, to me that means that there are internal rules of what is good, what is bad, what is right, what is wrong. To be tempted implies this is something that you SHOULD not do.
I no longer have those kind of rules. It was the restrictions and rules of my past that created a lot of suffering in my life. I was either being “good” or I was being “bad”. And that sets you up from not being connected to YOUR body’s internal, intuitive guidance system!
When someone speaks about temptation, that could also mean that there is a fear that some “food” has power over you! And that’s an emotional red flag that something internal, deep within you, is running the show. it doesn’t have to be that way!!
Just last week I got to experience a reminder of how far I’ve come and what’s possible with Loving Yourself Lean….
I was in Miami for a meeting, and checked into my hotel. It happens to be one of those hotels that gives you fresh, warm super yummy chocolate chip cookies. I felt the warmth in my hand, and enjoyed the sweet smell!
Since I had not eaten since early in my day, I was ready for dinner. I ordered a wonderful salad with grilled shrimp! I enjoyed every bite…and when finished, I remembered that chocolate chip cookie! So I took it out of my bag, and probably had 3-4 bites of pure decadence. Then, I had enough, and put the rest on my plate to be taken away.
I remembered a time when this was not possible! When I would not have been able to stop!
So I know what it’s like to not feel satisfied! I also know the damage that can result when you restrict YOURSELF too much!
So, this holiday season (and from this point forward), create a foundation of good nutrition, and take off the labels of “good” or “bad”. I don’t believe in that any more…and I now live a much happier and fulfilling life!!
And, since I’ve learned how to give myself permission to eat anything, and eat in a way that supports my body, I rarely even want foods that I formerly would have been “tempted” by!
You can experience that freedom, too!
FOOD FOR THOUGHT:
What can you do to give your body some good, healthy nutrition? If you are going to a party, make sure you eat well during the day (protein, veggies, a little fruit. Minimize your carbs on these days. You want to eat foods that support keeping your blood sugar stable. This minimizes your ‘risk’ of wanting sweets or overeating). Is there a treat you would like to have sometime this week? If so, make it a very special, CONSCIOUS time for YOURSELF! Be aware of how you are feeling! What are your thoughts? Are you enjoying yourself or worried that if you eat this, you won’t be able to stop? Freedom is available for you, too!
Have a great week!
